cos'è SABIRFEST

SABIRFEST è una manifestazione annuale che – nello spirito del sabir, lingua franca parlata nei porti e sulle imbarcazioni del mediterraneo – pone al centro dell’attenzione questo mare non solo come immenso patrimonio di storia, tradizioni, diversità tra i popoli che lo abitano, ma soprattutto come spazio culturale e sociale unico nel suo genere e determinante per progettare e vivere nuove forme di cittadinanza contro vecchie e nuove ingiustizie, vecchie e nuove preclusioni.
conoscenza, libertà, solidarietà e diritti sono, infatti, i punti cardinali che orientano SABIRFEST nel proporre ogni anno quattro giornate che invitano a ripensare e a scoprire insieme la complessità dello spazio geografico e umano del mediterraneo, delineando i percorsi su cui fin dalla prima edizione, nel 2014, la manifestazione continua a viaggiare nell’immaginario e nelle pratiche quotidiane di chi vi partecipa.

 

SABIRFEST è strutturato secondo i criteri della relazione e dell’ospitalità e si compone di tre sezioni tra loro complementari:

festival internazionale con un fitto programma di incontri con scrittori, attori e intellettuali, che spaziano dalla letteratura al teatro, dal cinema ai laboratori per bambini e ragazzi. nel 2017, sono stati circa 100 gli ospiti che lo hanno animato e oltre 8000 le persone che vi hanno preso parte a messina, catania e reggio calabria, con un Sabir Off a napoli frattamaggiore.

una serie di dialoghi tra cittadini e giornalisti, intellettuali, artisti, provenienti da diversi paesi del mediterraneo, e un forum internazionale tra gli attivisti e i rappresentanti della società civile impegnati nella costruzione di una cittadinanza mediterranea.

mostra mercato della produzione dal e sul mediterraneo, sostenuta dalla partecipazione di editori indipendenti e con un’area specifica dedicata ai libri per bambini.
in continua crescita di anno in anno, nel 2016 ha ospitato 60 case editrici da tutta italia e nel 2017 ha contato anche sulla presenza di editori esteri.

 

il programma delle iniziative e lo spirito che anima SABIRFEST, in questi anni, hanno coinvolto e interessato un pubblico via via sempre più ampio e variegato, tanto da coinvolgere dal 2016 la città di catania e dal 2017 anche reggio calabria.

anche in questa V edizione, dal 4 al 7 ottobre 2018, SABIRFEST animerà strade, piazze, edifici storici, teatri, scuole e università, nelle tre città, intrecciando i percorsi dei visitatori, degli ospiti e dei passanti in occasioni di incontro, di approfondimento e di svago.

tema guida dell'edizione 2018 sarà Riparare l’umano, un tema complesso, certo, ma soprattutto un auspicio, un invito, un ‘azzardo’ per mettere in luce dissonanze, squilibri e abusi del nostro tempo e provare a far emergere il desiderio, la determinazione a non rassegnarsi, a non subirli.

SABIRFEST è sostenuto in gran parte da coraggiosi sponsor privati, ma anche da una campagna di crowdfunding attraverso cui qualsiasi cittadino può contribuire. non da ultimo, è realizzata quotidianamente grazie all'impegno volontario dei componenti del comitato promotore SABIRFEST e di centinaia di volontari, i sabirici, il cui apporto di inestimabile valore garantisce non solo la riuscita della manifestazione, ma anche quello spontaneo spirito di collaborazione ed entusiasmo che ne rappresenta lo scopo ultimo.

SABIRFEST 2018 è dedicato a:

Padre Paolo Dall’Oglio, gesuita, ha fondato in Siria la comunità religiosa al-Khalil ed è un riconosciuto artefice del dialogo tra cristianesimo e islam. Il suo attivismo per la non-violenza e la libertà nei mesi della rivoluzione del 2011, gli ha causato l’ostracismo del governo siriano e nel 2012 ha dovuto lasciare il paese. Il 29 luglio 2013 è stato sequestrato a Raqqa, e da allora non si hanno più sue notizie.

I pescatori tunisini in carcere ad Agrigento dal 30 agosto,che rischiano fino a 15 anni di carcere per aver soccorso quattordici persone di nazionalità tunisina su una barca in panne tra la Tunisia e Lampedusa.

Ismail Iskandarany, giornalista egiziano arrestato al ritorno dall’Italia dove aveva partecipato a SABIRFEST 2016, e che il 23 maggio 2018 è stato condannato con sentenza definitiva a 10 anni di carcere per aver scritto sulla situazione in Sinai.

Ahed Tamimi, sedicenne palestinese arrestata nel dicembre del 2017 dalla Tsahal per aver schiaffeggiato due militari israeliani dopo aver saputo che il cugino era stato ferito, e condannata nel marzo 2018 a otto mesi di reclusione.

Alessandro Leogrande, intellettuale mediterraneo scomparso nel novembre 2017, le cui opere e il cui impegno hanno contribuito e contribuiscono all’esistenza di SABIRFEST.

A tutte le donne, gli uomini e i bambini che hanno perso la vita cercando di raggiungere l’Europa.

 

 

 

what is SABIRFEST

SABIRFEST is an annual event which – in the spirit of sabir, the common language spoken in the ports and at the docks of the Mediterranean – places that sea at its centre; not only as an immense patrimony of history, traditions and differences among the people who inhabit its shores, but also as a unique cultural and social space and an important source of opportunities for living new forms of citizenship while countering old and new forms of injustice and old and new forms of exclusion.

knowledge, freedom, solidarity and rights are, in fact, the cardinal directions that guide SABIRFEST during four days every year and invite us to rethink and discover the complexity of this geographical and human mediterranean space together, delineating the ways in which the event continues to travel within the imaginary and the daily practices of those who participate, for four years now.

SABIRFEST is structured according to the principles of relationship-building and hospitality and consists of three complementary sections:

an international festival with a full programme of encounters with writers, actors and intellectuals that go from literature to theatre, and from cinema to workshops for children and youth. in 2017, the guests that animated the event were around 100 and more than 8000 people participated in Messina, Catania and Reggio Calabria, with a one-day Sabir Off in Naples Frattamaggiore.

a series of conversations between citizens and journalists, intellectuals, and artists from different Mediterranean countries, and an international forum between activists and civil society practitioners engaged in building Mediterranean citizenship.

an exhibit-market of publications from and on the Mediterranean sustained by independent editors, with an area specifically dedicated to books for children. in continual growth over the years, in 2016, 60 publishing houses took part and in 2017 foreign editors were also present.

 

The initiative’s line up and the spirit that guides SABIRFEST has engaged and interested a diverse public that has grown so much, so that the city of Catania became involved in 2016, and Reggio Calabria in 2017.

also in the V edition, that will take place from 4 to 7 October 2018, SABIRFEST will animate streets, squares, historic buildings, theatres, schools and universities, in the three cities, intertwining the movements of visitors, guests and passersby, on occasions of meeting, deepening and recreation.

The guiding theme of the fifth edition will be Repairing the human, a complex theme, for sure, but above all a wish, an invitation, a chance to disclose dissonances, fractures and abuses of our period and try to bring out the desire, the determination not to resign, not to suffer them.

SABIRFEST is largely funded by bold private sponsors but also by a crowdfunding campaign through which any citizen can contribute. Last but not least, it is realized on a daily basis thanks to the volunteer commitment of the committee promoting SABIRFEST and the hundreds of volunteers, or sabirici, who make an inestimable contribution guaranteeing not only the realization of the initiative but also that spontaneous spirit of collaboration and enthusiasm which encapsulates the final objective.

SABIRFEST 2018 is dedicated to:

Padre Paolo Dall’Oglio, the Jesuit Father who founded the monastic community al-Khalil in Syria. He is a recognized maker of dialogue between Christianity and Islam. His activism for non-violence and freedom during the 2011 Syrian revolution made him the target of the Syrian regime’s ostracism, and in 2012 he had to leave the country. On July 29, 2013 he was kidnapped in Raqqa, and since then we have not heard of him anymore.

The Tunisian fishermen detained in Agrigento since August 30, 2018, who are risking up to 15 years of imprisonment for having rescued fourteen people of Tunisian nationality sailing on a boat in distress between Tunisia and Lampedusa.

Ismail Iskandarany, the Egyptian journalist arrested on his return from Italy, where he had participated in SABIRFEST 2016, and who on May 23, 2018 has been sentenced to 10 years of detention for having written about the situation in Sinai.

Ahed Tamimi, a sixteen year old Palestinian girl arrested in December 2017 by the Tsahal for slapping two Israeli soldiers, after hearing that her cousin had been wounded. Ahed has been condemned in March 2018 to several months of detention.

Alessandro Leogrande, the Mediterranean intellectual who passed away in November 2017, and whose works and commitment have contributed and still contribute to the existence of SABIRFEST.
